Playas de Tijuana Will Finally Have a Second Entryway

The project is expected to conclude by the end of this year

TIJUANA.- The Federal Government released pictures of the progress that has been made in the construction of a second entry road into Playas de Tijuana. The new entryway is a 441 meter long tunnel-like road that will be unique to the region because of its complexity and longitude.

"Once the construction has concluded, drivers will have the option of a quality, safe, and trustworthy road" said Alfonso Parés Pesqueira, Head Director of the Secretariat of Communications and Transportation (SCT) for the State of Baja California" He also stated that the road will bring greater connectivity and value to Playas de Tijuana (although this has been contested and controversial to some residents of the municipality).

So far, 300 meters of the 441 meter project have been completed, and the second entrance will be ready by the end of this year. The Federal Government's press release indicates that the project required an investment of 338.6 million pesos, funded by a Federal Highway Program implemented by President Enrique Peña Nieto.

The project was delayed for years, and widely anticipated, but it appears as though it will soon become a reality. One of the problems causing delays were various lawsuits during the previous administration by owners of the land where the roadway now passes. Another problem was the complexity of the terrain and technical construction issues, according to the SCT, making this project quite an engineering challenge.

It was not until responsibility of the project was transferred to the federal government that complete financing required to ensure its completion was secured. Many locals were not happy with the project, which they believe will bring more traffic to residential neighborhoods, and this was another source of controversy.

The roadway will be 4.1 kilometers long, and will include a bridge crossing over the toll road (which was completed many years ago and is visible just south of the toll booths), a tunnel-like road that will be 441 meters long, 15 meters wide, and 10 meters tall, as well as connections to the "free road and Avenida Flores Magon will also form part of the project.

Director Padrés has confirmed that there has been great progress to the project and that they are confident that complex projects such as this to improve roadways will further the federal government's goal to "Mover a Mexico", which is the federal government's slogan meaning ""to move Mexico."
