Tijuana Strenghtens Ties With Tel-Aviv, Israel

public security, tax revenue, and industry among topics discussed

TIJUANA.- On Thursday afternoon, Tijuana Mayor Jorge Astiazarán Orcí, received a friendly visit from Tel-Aviv, Israel Mayor Ron Huldai, in a visit intended to strengthen ties between both cities.

At the meeting, the Tijuana's Mayor primarily discussed public security related issues in the city, as it relates to the general perception that other cities and countries have about Tijuana. The considerable change over recent years in terms of security has increased the well-being of residents, in a city that continuously grows.

"In 2008, the social situation in our city was complicated due to the unfortunate increase in violence. However, thanks to recovery in the maquiladora sector, large companies from countries in Asia have decided to once again invest in the city, in part due to our highly qualified labor force", said Mayor Jorge Astiazarán.

The Mayor indicated that parallel to the productive manufacturing sector, medical clusters and the aerospace industry have also created an important push to regenerate the city's economy.

Tel-Aviv Mayor Ron Huldai indicated that some of his main goals are to elevate the levels of public security in his city, incentive tourism in one of the cities considered at the vanguard on an international level. Huldai met with Tijuana's mayor and discussed topics such as the city's tax base to make a comparison about the primary sources of tax revenue of Mexican cities when compared to Israel.

After the meeting concluded, Mayor Astiazarán visited the Tijuana Cultural Center (CECUT) to attend Mayor Ron Huldai's conference called 'Tel-Aviv Yafo: Israel's Startup City", one of many key-note speakers scheduled during the 10-day long Tijuana Innovadora 2014 summit.
