Day of the Dead Celebration in Rosarito, Baja California

A Mexican celebration of those who have passed away

ROSARITO.- With October coming to an end, one of Mexico's most traditional and long-lasting celebrations is drawing near: Day of the Dead or Día de Muertos, a tradition pre-dating the Spanish conquest to honor those who have passed away. The traditional celebration is officially on November 2nd, and starts on the 1st of the month.

The celebration was originally practiced by indigenous groups like the Mexica, Purepecha, and Totonaca and has come to be known as the primary Mexican celebrations, and one of the most representative meso-american festivities. In an effort to preserve the ritual of altars, skulls and "catrinas", Rosarito will be hosting a totally family-friendly event on November 1st and 2nd, called "Katrina Fest".

In addition to typical Day of the Dead festivities, the event will include art demonstrations and gastronomy to celebrate not just the deceased but also the lives of our ancestors.

The event will be completely free, and will take place in the Municipal Art and Culture Institute (IMAC) in Rosarito, in Abelardo Rodriguez Park, starting at noon and running until midnight.
