Tonayán: One of Baja's Favorite Drinks

After Johnny Walker, this agave-based drink is the top pick

MEXICO.- Tijuana may be Mexico's craft brew capital, but, according to El Financiero, other drinks that Baja Californians like are Buchanan's Whisky and El Jimador Reposado Tequila.

But, at college parties, the favorite is a type of Mezcal called el Tonayán, which is used as the base of popular so-called "aguas locas", or crazy water-a alcohol laced fruit punch.

The popularity of this drink seeps into the musical realm, and in Tijuana there is even a punk band that adopted the name of liquor as its group name.[/p]

In the region that makes up Baja California, Baja California Sur, Sonora, and Sinaloa, these liquors lead in sales, although tendencies in other states indicated that nationally, no drink is more popular than Johnnie Walker Red Label, taking top positions in five of the six regions studied across the country.

The passion for these drinks can be directly linked to headlines, such as what happened this past September when a person died after becoming intoxicated from Tonayan. According to local reports, the victim was highly addicted to the agave-based liquor that ultimately lead to his death.
