UBER driver arrested for sexually assaulting Indian passenger

This is the second time a case like this has been reported

INDIA. - A 25 year old women who was traveling in a UBER car on Friday night was sexually assaulted India, approximately at 11pm, after she had fallen asleep.

The driver, who had been working for UBER for the last 6 months, turned off his cell phone decided to take a detour in order to arrive to an abandoned place and proceed with the assault.

Reports indicate that he later abandoned the victim outside, but not before he threatened her so she wouldn't go to the authorities and report the aggression. However, the victim decided to press charges against the driver who abused her, and was able to identify him thanks to the service's phone number and a photograph of the car he was driving.

Finally, local media indicated that the alleged aggressor, named Shiv Kumar Yadav, was arrested after being persecuted last Sunday.

According to the police, this event ended up revealing a series of omissions that where done when Uber hired him.

New Delhi's police commissioner, Madhur Verma said: "We started off with no clues. Uber didn't have any information about the car of the driver".

According to the agent, not even his address, current location status or cell phone were verified. Also, the aggressor was not wearing a distinctive commercial driver uniform, even though it is a legal requirement for driving a cab in New Delhi.

Asked about the matter, Uber shared an official statement saying that their intentions are to cooperate with the authorities. Police reports confirm that they already had the information they needed from the company pointing out that they only hired staff with licenses, permits and valid insurance issued by the government.

What the spokesperson did not explain, according to Huffington Post, was if the company verified said permits and wasn't a "red flag" noticed when the driver turned off his cell phone linked with Uber's software.
