The arrest of the leader of the Sinaloa Cartel was announced in late February.

There were a lot of conspiracy theories on Facebook about what led to "El Chapo's" arrest, arguing that it was just a mere smokescreen to "cover up the increasing delinquency in the country", as claimed by Michoacán's self-defenses.

In addition, other groups said it was an attempt to cover up "the failure of the Free Trade Agreement and the recent approval of the so called structural reforms that will deepen the crisis", or so said the president of the National Regeneration Movement (Movimiento de Regeneracion Nacional, MORENA, in Spanish).
