TIME'S Person of the Year: "Ebola fighters"

To those who responded to the call in Africa

WORLD. - Among the eight possible winners for the title of Person of the Year by Time magazine, it was announced this morning that the 2014 winner was: All of those who have fought against the Ebola virus. According to an official statement, The ones who answered the call are rightful winners.

Taylor Swift, the Ferguson protesters, Tim Cook (Apple's CEO), Jack Ma (the wealthiest man in China), Masoud Barzani (Irak-Kurdish leader), Roger Goodell (NFL commissioner) and Vladimir Putin (Russia's President) were some of the names that could have possibly made the cover this year, however, Time's editorial based its selection on the people that created the biggest impact, not just in show business, but also in our lives for good or bad.

According to CNN, if the winner had been elected by the public, Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi would had won. Nonetheless, the role the health workers' intervention played against the biggest Ebola outburst in history came out as the winner. This year, more than 16,000 people were infected by the virus, taking the lives of almost 7,000 due to the epidemic.

"Time's 2014 People of the Year, are those who fought against Ebola, because they did tireless acts of bravery and mercy, they bought the world time to increase its defenses, they risked, they persevered, and they sacrificed themselves to save others' lives" said the magazine regarding its final decision.

Last year, the man chosen to be on the cover was Pope Francis, thanks to his acts of compassion and all the initiatives he made to restructure the Catholic Church regarding controversial subjects that span from his religious stance towards homosexuality, to the economic policies around the world, as well as the conflicts that threaten peace in many aspects.
