A Tijuana and San Diego 2024 Olympic bid just became possible

The IOC authorizes joint bids starting this year

TIJUANA.-After the authorization of joint bids by the IOC (International Olympic Committee), Tijuana and San Diego rekindle their hopes of hosting the Olympic Games in 2024, and could be the first joint hosting to ever happen in Olympic history.

Several media outlets report that the IOC lifted a ban on such bids at their latest meeting, after recent complications of finding self-sufficient candidates due to the now enormous expenses that the Games represent now, mobilizing Olympic authorities to implement new ideas, one of them being to split the work between two cities, which starting with 2024 could be a hit, given that it would not only be two cities but two countries, Tijuana having Mexico and San Diego having the United States.

Mexico has already agreed to support Tijuana in its candidature, while San Diego is a city that could provide easy budgeting. The improvements on state infrastructure would be something that would consume today’s budgeting. However, the 10 years that the city has to work on it, motivates it to make this a reality.

The Mexican delegation confirms that they would definitely take into consideration the possibilities of a bid, and that in case of participation they are sure they have the capability of winning said candidature.

The next Olympic Games will be in Rio de Janeiro in less than two years and in Tokyo in 2020. In San Diego and Tijuana do win, it would be United States´ fifth time hosting, having already done so in St. Louis in 1904, Los Angeles 1932, Los Angeles 1984 and Atlanta 1996. For Mexico it would be its second edition after being host in 1968.
