Seniors in Rosarito get more funding in 2015 budget

10,000 of its residents are seniors

ROSARITO.- Local congresswoman Laura Torres Ramírez was able to secure an increase in funding of up to 20% from the spending bill that will be destined for senior programs in Rosarito throughout 2015.

The plan was unanimously approved and the extra funding will mostly go to more entertainment and workshop programs, as well as support groups that guarantee the well-being of its population, which is conformed mainly by 70-year-old adults.

Altogether, $880,500 pesos ($60,000 USD) will be used for the purpose of social reintegration. Mainly, to get the word out on programs that already exist but receive very little attention. There are already an estimated 30 organizations in the city dedicated to promoting entertainment and social development for the elderly.

Currently, it is estimated that 10% of the Mexican population consists of seniors, of which 220,000 live in Baja California and 10,000 reside in Rosarito. However, taking into consideration that Mexico is a country where half its population is less than 26 years old, it is foreseen that percentages will change in favor of the elderly in the next few years. For example, in 2025, there will be a total of 28% elderly citizens in the population (18% more than its current percentage).
