Brother of former Mexican President cleared of all crimes

There will be no appeal by the state

MEXICO.-Nineteen years later, after being charged with embezzlement, Mexican business man, Raul Salinas de Gortari was found not-guilty according to the last statement issued by the Third Penal Unitary Tribunal of the Federal District last Friday, and after being in trial for an appeal that was interjected by attorney Jesús Murillo Karam back in July 2013.

The trial that declared the business man's innocence, has spent more than a month without a headline and some national media outlets have reported that at the time, neither Salinas de Gortari nor the Attorney's General Office of the Republic (Procuraduría General de la República PGR, in Spanish) , have been officially notified of the ruling, which will not be able to be appeal again by the agency.

The ruling was decided once proof provided by the PGR wasn't enough to prove that the acquisition of 49 properties, with a value that exceeded Salinas' income as a National Company of Popular Subsistence (CONASUPO, for its Spanish initials) official, was a product of corruption. More specifically, the diversion of resources that occurred during his brother's administration, Former Mexican President Carlos Salinas de Gortari, who ruled from 1990 to 1994, were at least $2,218,000 pesos ($150,502.48 dlls) disappeared from the public budget.
