United States and Cuba to begin normalizing relations

Pope Francis acted as a mediator in talks

UNITED STATES.- The feud between the United States and Cuba is over, as it was detailed today in simultaneous announcements from both President Barack Obama and Raúl Castro:

"For humanitarian reasons"Cuba decided to free the American contractor, Alan Gross, who was incarcerated for 5 years in Havana, finishing his sentence for alleged espionage. At the same time, the United States freed three Cuban spies that had spent thirteen years in American prisons.

In an attempt to normalize their relationships, US president Barack Obama made public a plan that will allow the exchange of goods between both countries, which had been under a trade and diplomatic embargo since 1961 as a response to Fidel Castro's communist revolution and subsequent regime.

Some of the subjects that were talked about were migration and human trafficking, as well as some measures regarding human rights, the environment and democratic reforms that Cuba intends to implement shortly after this deal was announced.

Why now after 53 years of political feud? According to a White House source, the initiative snowballed into a full historic agreement thanks to Catholic figure Pope Francis, who acted as a mediator to close up differences between countries.
