This is what prisoners in Mexico will dine on Christmas Eve

Christmas and New Year's is also celebrated in prison

MEXICO.- Christmas Eve is upon us, and it's a day of celebration for millions of families around the world. But what of those serving a sentence in prison? Being in jail is no exception, at least for the inmates of prisons in the nation's Federal District (capital).

An estimate of 40,000 inmates will savor a Christmas feast that includes turkey covered in plum sauce, Hawaiian pasta, apple and apricot salad and fruit punch, (given that alcohol is not permitted).

A week later, on December 31st, in order to celebrate New Year's, a second menu will be offered, which includes a marinated pork leg, Italian pasta, German potatoes and fruit punch, according to the Undersecretary of the Federal District's Penitentiary System. Between the two dinners, it is expected that 79,500 food portions are served.

"During this holiday season, a special menu is prepared among the prison kitchens with special quality ingredients, and must be certified according to official rules", said Hazael Ruiz Ortega, Undersecretary of the Federal Penitentiary System.
