Projects That Will Transform Ensenada's Port Infrastructure

Ensenada could likely become a highly competitive port inside the country

As a guest at the monthly meeting of Ensenada's Committee for Economic Development (COPREEN), the CEO of Integral Port Administration (API), Hector Bautista Mejia, presented the projects that will transform the infrastructure of the Port of Ensenada, coupled with the Port Reengineering Project, which represents an investment of more than 2 billion pesos.

Bautista stressed that Ensenada could likely become a highly competitive port inside the country (through cabotage), as well as outside of it (via transshipment).

"The goal is to convert the port to cabotage and transshipment activities and transform the port of Ensenada into the first green port of Mexico," Bautista said. "We are about to begin the first stage of Ensenada's boardwalk, and a list of maritime and port infrastructure projects."

The director of API said that the port of Ensenada is ending its year with attention and port reception of approximately 287 cruise ships. "Much of the cultural wealth and heritage of Mexico should be reflected in Ensenada, so that tourists can become an admirer of the nation and visit it often and again."

The port-reengineeringlist is composed of the following projects:

Port Breakwater Expansion

It consists of a building with additional 790 linear meters. Through this, the safety of maritime port operations is guaranteed and risks of incidents are reduced for vessels, cargo and, above all, for the personnel working in the port area.

Construction of wave deflector in the breakwater of the Port of Ensenada

It includes the continuation of the building of the wave deflector over 590 linear meters of the port's breakwater. With this, adequate protection to the areas bordering the main breakwater (600 meters) is provided.

Extending the Port of Ensenada's turning basin and navigation channels

This project is divided in turn into three parts: the navigation channel projection of depth from 16.70m to 18.20m, the turning basin's projection of depth from 15.70m to 17.50m and theturning basin's expansion from 450m to 550m. With this project, ships of up to 13,000 TEU (capacity of a container of 20 feet or 6.1 meters in length) may enter, thus achieving an annual growth of up to 250,000 TEUs.

Maritime Traffic Control Center (MTCC) Relocation

This project involves the relocation of the MTCC in a strategic position, which will have offices on top and, above these, radars and antennas will be located, occupying an area of approximately 245 square meters. It also aims to relocate the fire station and CCTV control room. With this, the optimization of their operations will be achieved for better control, surveillance and security of maritime traffic in the arrival of vessel ships, enabling greater communication and vision between the MTCC, the Port of Sauzal and the Port of Costa Azul.
