Apple Wax Conspiracy Video Debunked

What he scrapes off is natural and harmless

WORLD.- A video that roaming around Facebook and social media during the last several days, shows us a man who supposedly unveils the "dangers" of eating products from those big scary multinational companies, when he scraped the skin of an apple and noticed that a "whitish" plastic-like dust came off.

"This man recorded and proved that apples are covered with a coat of what appears to be wax or plastic. What are the multinational companies selling us?" is the description of this Youtube video, which on Facebook has received over 13,000,000 views.

Of course, the man who uploaded the video has a name: Manuel Nava Rro. In his almost three minute clip he asks "what are we eating?" and if "it's normal for an apple to have this?" in regards to the wax he scrapes off the fruit. Well...yes, it is. To answer his question, it is normal for an apple to have this harmless wax and it's far beyond from being dangerous.

"This is a natural wax much like carnauba, an edible fat that is extracted from palm leaves. It's used for waxing fruits (apples, citrus, cucumbers, bananas, etc) during the post-harvest process in order to elongate their life spam and maintain their freshness. It decreases perspiration which inhibits a few degrees of dehydration, while at the same time it keeps them safe from fungus and bacteria and maintains the fruit's natural glow. It's totally harmless," says Pedro Terrón, a myth hunter from Bulos y Leyendas.

It's very common to find stories and videos that turn out to be fake, if we only took five minutes of our time to actually google the subject. Especially when it comes to food, where there is a lot of information misquoted and biased masking the truth mainly on social media. Suggestion? Always have a bit of doubt in the things you see or read on these kind of platforms.
