Drug Filled Drone Crashes In Tijuana After Attempting to Fly Over Border

It was just a matter of time before drug dealers took advantage of technology

TIJUANA. - Former Arizona Governor and United States Homeland Security Secretary, Janet Napolitano, once said: "show me a 50ft wall, and I'll show you a 51 ft ladder." By that, she meant to criticize the construction of a wall placed throughout the Mexican border. She probably never imagined that in the future, a ladder wasn't even going to be necessary.

An Unnamed Aerial Vehicle (UAV), also known as a "drone", fell into the parking lot of a shopping mall in Tijuana, after what appears to be an attempt to traffic crystal meth through air over the international border.

Vicente Calderón, reporting for NBC 7 San Diego, said that the drone carried 3kg of crystal methamphetamines and that it crashed into the parking lot of the Pueblo Amigo Inn Hotel and Casino, around 10 p.m., just before it could cross over the San Ysidro border.

The vehicle was found by municipal police, with its load still attached. Qore.com mentioned that police estimated the value of the package around $1,800 dlls.

Laura Ley, from El Universal describes a bit the characteristics of the UAV. "On the vehicle you can read 'Spreading Wings 900'… its colored silver with black; it has six propellers and a green lithium battery."

According to police reports, this is the first time that the city registers this type of drug dealing attempt, although there have been reports of similar incidents throughout the rest of Mexico's Northern border.
