Baja's "Seguro Popular" and "Prosalud" Unite To Provide Free Health Care

A new alliance will allow low income citizens to take care of ailments such as hernias and tumors

TIJUANA.- Baja's "Seguro Popular", one of Mexico's state run health services for low income citizens (similar to Medicaid in the U.S.), invites everyone enrolled to take advantage of the medical services that Prosalud, a healthcare nonprofit, has to offer, given that they have an agreement through which the beneficiaries of the governmental program can get free medical attention in thirteen different health centers.

Seguro Popular State Director, Carlos Torres Torres, mentioned that their purpose is to provide bigger opportunities so that citizens can have better access to health care, establishing alliances with different public and private organisms that will allow its users have quality alternatives regarding health care, as is the intention of State Governor, Francisco Vega de Lamadrid.

"This alliance allowed low income citizens to take care of ailments such as hernias, tonsil operations, tumor removals, studies for cervical or breast cancer detection; for which over $2,000,000 of pesos ($136,000dlls) were invested in", said the Governor.

General Director of Prosalud, Marcela Merino, informed that in 2014 they reached over 60,000 people in marginalized sectors, where if they are not assisted directly in their communities, they don't go to the doctor whether for economical or cultural reasons.

Some interventions that citizens can have free access to are: hernia operations, HPV detection which could cause cervical cancer, removal of malignant moles, circumcision, tubal ligations and vasectomies.
