Former Rosaritense Speaks at the White House

Presents the launch of the "Let Girls Learn" Initiative

On March 03, 2015, Charlene Espinoza, a Mexican woman who grew up in California and Rosarito, Baja California, presented the launch of the "Let Girls Learn" initiative at the White House. The project will be operated by the Peace Corps around the world.

Charlene Espinoza is the founder of a non-profit organization called The Bosh Bosh Project, in Salala, Liberia which was created in order to address the high dropout rate and lack of opportunities for girls there. The project started out as a girls club where they could study, learn a trade, and stay in school. Bosh Bosh is the name of the colorful scraps of fabric used in the design of the handbags that the Liberian girls crafted, which were sold to support the Bosh Bosh program. The profits were used to pay for tuition and school supplies. The NGO's goal is to empower women and girls through vocational training, business management, and extracurricular educational opportunities.

Because of her work with The Peace Corp and The Bosh Bosh project, Ms. Espinoza was invited to announce the launch the "Let Girls Learn" project, and introduce the President and First Lady on stage to present the project. The project aims to promote girls obtaining education, reduce the barriers to education, prevent teen marriage, reduce teen pregnancy, empower leaders, and thus promote girls' higher education goals.

[p]According to the President, promoting education for girls not only makes sense from a humanitarian perspective, but from an economic perspective as well. Michelle Obama referenced other young women championing the cause of advocacy for female education, such as Malala Yousafzai, the 2014 winner of the Nobel Peace Prize. Malala, the daughter of a school owner in Pakistan, was shot in the head in 2012 by a gunman for her outspoken support of girls attending schools despite the Taliban's ban.
