San Ysidro Southbound Pedestrian Crossing to Be Shut Down

Artwork Installation Will Effect Border Crossers for 15 days

[Update: The southbound pathway will not be completely closed. Portions of the southbound pedestrian path may be intermittently blocked during this construction. (For example, the right side may be blocked while still allowing travelers to walk on the left side)]

SAN YSIDRO.- Border crossers will want to plan ahead for possible delays on their way to Tijuana. From March 10 through 25, the San Ysidro pedestrian crossing will be intermittently closed down to southbound border crossers.

The General Services Administration plans to shut down the southbound border crossing intermittently, with construction ceasing entirely from 2pm to 6pm in order to not effect peak traffic times. This as part of the ongoing remodeling project, to install artwork along the pedestrian southbound entry.

The proposed art structure will measure 20 meters long and will represent the ideals of security and protection of the international border. The artwork is comprised of 41 elements and is inspired in the plumage of eagles and regional plants like the agave.

The artwork by Seattle artist Norie Sato is called "Trail Parkway", and will include a stainless steal roof to provide partial shade to pedestrians, according to UT San Diego according to the GSA. The artist aims to make returning to Mexico more friendly and enjoyable.
