Thousands of Farm Workers Return to the San Quintin Valley

Governor Francisco Vega talked with them

SAN QUINTIN, B.C.- During the work tour that took place this past weekend, Baja Governor, Francisco "Kiko" Vega de Lamadrid, alongside the members of his cabinet took a tour through the agricultural fields, where he supervised the work that have been done and talk to the field workers.

During this visit, the Governor met thousands of workers that returned to their employers, which according to reports from the State Secretary of Agriculture and Livestock (SEFOA), field activities have been reactivated an 85% to 90% in one of the most important and productive areas of the entity.

In that manner, Governor Vega acknowledged the progress made through the negotiation table that was installed as well as the authorities participation from the three branches of government, called "Alianza Nacional, Estatal y Municipal". Through all of this, 64 agreements were achieved, among them, there is the agreement on which the workers accept a payment increase of 15%, proposed by the employers, in order to reintegrate to their employment sources as well as maintaining talks open in the state.

The San Quintin Valley which extends to the Colonet, Camalu and Vicente Guerrero area, has a cultivated surface of nearly 8,500 hectares (21,000 acres), were tomatoes, strawberries, cucumbers, cranberries, raspberries, blueberries and onions are sowed; according to official data, last year approximately 35,000 jobs were created in the region as a result of agricultural activity, 75% of which are temporary.

Visit to the State's Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare Office

As part of his visit, Governor Vega went to the temporary office installed by the Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare (STPS), located in the outdoor forecourt of San Quintin's Government Center, which has as purpose to attend and give council to field workers regarding labor issues.

Alongside the Secretary of General Government, Francisco Rueda Gómez, Governor Vega was informed about the services that this module provides, among them there is work orientation regarding labor regulations, complaint reception as well as report of work violations and irregularities, for which the office works in coordination with other government departments such as the STPS from the Federal Government and the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS), among others.
