Delicious, affordable and 100% Mexican

MEXICO.- Today is a day that every Mexican food lover can't miss, given that today every taco stand in Mexico and the world (if you can find something outside Taco Bell or Del Taco) is celebrating "Taco Day".

"Taco Day" is a date that was set to pay homage to the most representative dish of Mexican culture. Whether they're carne asada, adobada, tongue, carnitas or which ever type of taco you enjoy, today is a perfect day to leave your diets behind and eat guilt-free. But before you do, here is a little taco history:

Even though there is no exact date on which this dish was invented, historians believe the origin of tacos goes way back to Pre-Hispanic Mexico, were workers probably ate it as lunch, given that they spent their days working the fields, away from home. Earlier versions of tacos, prior to the country's conquest, were much simpler and easy to carry. Nowadays, we have guacamole, sauces and extra lime to go along with them, making a practically impossible task to carry tacos as work lunch.

Nevertheless, the oldest registry of this fest was documented by Spanish conqueror and chronicler, Bernal Díaz del Castillo in "The True History of the Conquest of New Spain". Here, Bernal describes a banquet that would have taken place thanks to Hernan Cortes' initiative, in Coyoacan, with pig's meat brought from Cuba.

According to the publication, "carnitas" accompanied by tortillas, gave origin to the first taco fest in Mexico.

How many tacos can you eat? The world record was set by Takeru Kobayashi of Japanese origin, after eating 130 tacos in 10 minutes. Good luck to any Mexican who tries to defeat him!
