It's Been 20 Years Since Selena's Death

She was murdered on March 31st, 1995

Selena Quintanilla-Pérez, one of the most prominent artist of Tex-Mex music, passed away on a day like this two decades ago. The Texan singer, known for hits such "La Carcacha" and "Como la Flor", was killed at age 23 by a shot fired by her then associate and fan club leader, Yolanda Saldivar, after having argued about missing funds in one the singer's boutique accounts.

According to Billboard, alongside her family group Los Dinos, she was set as the most sold Latin artist of the 90s. Her album Ven Conmigo (1990) was the first album by a Texan performer to achieve a Golden status. In 1994, she won a Grammy for Amor Prohibido, her last production.

The impact of her death spread out to the Latin community worldwide, when over 60,000 fans traveled to her hometown in order to attend her funeral, as well as visiting the place where she was murdered and her childhood home. When posts by The New York Times and People shared the news on their front pages, the skyrocketed sales of the latter led to the creation of People en Español. George W. Bush, who was Texas Governor at the time, declared Selena's birthday (April 12th), as the singer's official date in the state.

After the incident, Selena's father, Abraham Quintanilla Jr. decided to launch a posthumous recompilation of Dreaming of You, being harshly criticized for trying to exploit his daughter's image. Her killer (Saldívar) was sentenced to life in prison, but could be release under probation by 2025. Selena's biographic movie was released in 1997, giving Puerto Rican actress, Jennifer López instant fame.
