Strange But VERY Useful Tips to Celebrate World Health Day

Dare to make little changes

WORLD.- Today, April 7th, we celebrate World Health Day and what better way to do it than by sharing some tips to improve our lifestyles with some key points that have a direct impact on our health. Here is a small list, originally published on Health.com with some "weird yet useful" tips to loose weight, avoid weariness and keep a good oral hygiene.

Eat MORE food and LESS low-fat snacks

Some people believe that is better to eat low-fat snacks in between meals to avoid "pigging out", but Health magazine invites you to eat more whole foods and less "filling" snacks, even if they are low-fat.

"Eating small amounts of carbs just increases your blood sugar levels, making you crave for more" reveals Doctor Amy Goodson. In any case, it's better to eat food that is high on calories and protein given that they offer the sensation of being full for a longer period of time. In the end, you "eat less calories" than you would have if you ate little snacks, pointed out Goodson.

Don't brush your teeth after eating

"At least, not right away," suggests president of the Academy of General Dentistry, Howard R. Gamble, due to the fact that brushing your teeth right after you eat (especially something sour), speeds up enamel abrasion and it erosions the teeth's bottom layer. You should wait up to 30 or 60 minutes before brushing them again.

If you feel tired, don't have an energy drink; drink water.

When you take an energy drink, such as Red Bull, Monster, Rockstar, etc., you are actually drinking five times more caffeine than a regular coffee, taurine and approximately 13 spoonfuls of sugar, not very appealing right?

Those who drink them constantly will agree with us. Once the "pumped up" effect wears off, it leaves an irritable and nervous sensation, with a rapid pulse and even more fatigue than before you took the drink. If you're tired and sleepy, drink water, "dehydration is what causes fatigue."

Want to loose weight? Avoid diet soda at all costs.

It's not just about sugar, but it's also the gas that can be found in soft drinks, even if their diet. If you want to shake off a few pounds, the best thing you can do is ignore this beverage completely. A recent study from the University of Texas found that people who drink diet soda on a regular basis, increased up to 70% of their waistlines in comparison to those who don't.

Feeling tired? Exercise

This might sound ironic, but it actually isn't. If you're tired, the best way to gain back energy is through physical activity, as this will put our circulatory system to work and send oxygen to your brain.

"Everything we do requires oxygen. Exercising helps us work in a more efficient manner making us less tired. Furthermore, we function better mentally."

World Health Day took place for the first time on 1950 and since then, each year the World Health Organization (WHO) chooses a theme in order to create awareness and invite everyone to focus their efforts on a specific area. This year's theme is "Food Safety", mainly focusing on how we can improve the quality of the meals we eat daily.

Far beyond avoiding junk food, WHO is concerned about the death rates that are registered each year due to food poisoning. It is estimated that nearly 2,000,000 people die every year thanks to parasites, bacteria, viruses and different chemical substances that are hazardous for the human body.
