Nearly 700 Migrants Died in the Mediterranean Sea After Boat Capsizes

While attempting to arrive in Europe

ITALY.- After a boat carrying nearly 700 migrants sank along between the coast of Italy and Libya during the night, this could turn out to be the worst incident regarding migrants in the history of Europe.

According to media such as Reuters and AP, up until now only a handful of 24 survivors have been rescued, taking into account 650 deaths have already accumulated.

"A tragedy is unfolding in the Mediterranean, and if the EU and the world continue to close their eyes, it will be judged in the harshest terms as it was judged in the past when it closed its eyes to genocides when the comfortable did nothing," mentioned Malta's Prime Minister, Joseph Muscat. Malta an island nation on the Mediterranean, is a country constantly challenged by this problematic.

If these deaths are confirmed, it will sum up to a total of 1,500 migrants who pass away seeking new life in Europe but die trying while rowing away in small boats.

Malta has launched a raid using most of their military forces as well as Italian ships and even commercial vessels. The boat sank when it was still on Libyan waters, 200 km South of Lampedusa, the biggest archipelago near the cost of Africa.

Associated Press (AP) has a gallery where it shows some of the people rescued over the past few days, as well as the boats that have made it to the Italian coast.
