Loud Snoring Can Cause Memory Damage

Respiratory problems while sleeping are more common among seniors

WORLD.- A recent study published in Neurology magazine revealed that loud snoring and sleep apnea could cause brain damage by deteriorating your memory and thoughts at a very young age.

The research made by a group of scientist from the NYU Langone Medical Center analyzed the medical history of 2,470 adults among the ages of 55 and 90, classifying them into three main groups: alzheimer, first stages cognitive impairment, and no memory problems.

The results showed that the people who have respiratory problems while sleeping presented a mild cognitive impairment 10 years before those who didn't.

For those who had respiratory problems, this impairment appear at the age of 77, for those who didn't it appeared at 90. In the case of Alzheimer the time difference was of five years.

"Abnormal respiratory patterns while sleeping, such as loud snoring and sleep apnea are common among seniors, they affect nearly 52% of men and 26% of women," explain Ricardo Osorio, study leader.

Furthermore, the research showed that treatment for this disorder with a breathing machine can delay a memory downturn.
