Today on International Book Day, Let's Give Out Books and Flowers!

April 23rd is Saint Jordi's day

Every year on April 23rd we celebrate Saint George, patron of countries such as Bulgaria, England, Spain and Argentina. Saint Jordi as it's called in Catalonia, is considered a saint patron for all of those who are in love, kind of the European version of Cupid.

According to legend, a long time ago in Cappadocia, lived a dragon that attacked the realm and its habitants had to offer a person or a sheep as sacrifice. One day, the princess was chosen at random to be devoured by the dragon, luckily a knight in shining armor called George came to her rescue by

putting his sword through the dragon's chest, whose blood created a beautiful red rose, which was given to the princess.

On 1996, UNESCO declared April 23rd as International Book Day.

This why in Catalonia and many Spaniard cities, men are accustomed to giving red roses to women, accompanied by an ear of wheat, in return women give them books, given that on this day two of the greatest authors in history passed away: Miguel de Cervantes and William Shakespeare. As part of the cultural agenda, readings, street acts and several events take place.

But, what meaning does this day have for those who are in love?

The red rose symbolizes exclusivity, its color symbolizes passion as for the ear of wheat its symbolizes fertility. Saint Jordi's

day, marks the beginning of Spring, making it ideal for walking around and enjoy with your partner this tradition.

So, today let's give out books and flower. Happy International Book Day!
