Detoxing Can Have More Risks Than You Think

You could end up gaining much more weight than what you lost

SONORA.- Fredy Nava Reygoza, Nutrition Coordinator of the Mexican Institute for Social Security (IMSS, in Spanish) in the state of Sonora, talked during an interview about the consequences of going through a detox diet, given that detoxifying your organism for a week with just juice intakes could actually be counterproductive for your health.

During its extraction process, fruits loose their vitamins given that they are in contact with oxygen and sunlight. What ends up inside your organism is just water and sugar, informed Nava Reygoza.

Furthermore, the intake of these juices only provides your body with 400 daily calories instead of the recommend 2,000, making you run the risk of suffering from low blood sugar levels.

Sometimes fruits and vegetables nutritional values are found in its peel, which is why when you extract its juice you leave fiber aside, this may eventually trigger intestinal problems.

"A diet plan has to comply to its meaning, its has to be a long term plan that adjusts and modifies a person's life regarding its food intake, it isn't just about juicing for a week because your predisposing yourself to go on a fast, because that fast is identified as a lack of energy by your body," expressed Nava.

The specialist also explain that the real reason behind detoxing consists in reducing foods that in an excessive intake deteriorate your organism, such as red meats that provide uric acid or foods that have high cholesterol or sodium levels.

"The way you should interpret detoxing is by providing you body with healthy meals, that's how you should see it."

It's highly recommended that fruits and vegetables are eaten in their natural state, and as for chicken and fish, they should be part of your diet permanently.

If you wish to change your eating habits it's important that you get help from nutrition specialists. If you don't follow recommendations you could end up gaining more weight than what you lost while detoxing.
