5 Things You Should Know About The American "Cinco de Mayo"

Mexico still is puzzled by its popularity up north.

In Mexico, Cinco de Mayo isn't celebrated as much as in the United States, with many Mexicans and other Hispanic people baffled (and some angered by the possible cultural appropriation behind it) by this, event given that, for those who actually live or grew up near Mexican culture, it isn't a big deal.

Nevertheless, here are five facts everyone in Mexico should know about 'Cinco de Mayo', whether they are from Puebla or some place else.

1- The main reason for celebrating Cinco de Mayo in the United States is because of historic events. Mexico beating the French army during the 'Battle of Puebla' is considered by some historians as an important event in the U.S. Civil War, as it stopped France from fully conquering Mexico and aiding the Confederates (Napoleon III did not want the U.S. to continue on growing). Historians point out that the first time Americans celebrated this day as an act of solidarity with their neighboring country was indeed back in 1863. Years later, the holiday became a celebration of Mexican-American identity and pride, specially thanks to the 'Chicano' movement from the late 60s onward.

2- Contrary to what people think, that it is just an excuse to party, the whole "Fiesta" concept is a complete experience where you can learn and pay respects to México's culture, one example of it is by representing some traditional folklore dances.

3- The popularity of the holiday has encouraged some restaurants to involve Mexican Cuisine in their menus. Tacosare a must have for this celebration, in some places they serve them all year round. The top 5 favorite tacos for Americans are:

Chorizo Taco: spiced pork sausage with onion, limes and tomatillo.
Tinga Poblana: pork, chorizo, chipotle peppers with a slice of avocado and a little bit of lettuce to add a crunchiness.
Pork Carnitas: seasoned pulled pork over traditional mesquite, topped with grilled onions, cilantro and salsa.
Fish Taco: grilled or fried taco, sour cream, lettuce, a generous amount of lemon and salsa.
Grilled Shrimp: the perfect combo of a little bit spicy with sweetness served with the famous "pico de gallo" salsa (tomato, cilantro, red onion, chile and lemon juice).

4- Cinco de Mayo, it's also part of the top five drinking holidays and the alcohol industry loves it. Let's be honest, everyone likes to party with beer and tequila . The other four top drinking holidays are: 4th of July, Saint Patrick's Day, Thanksgiving and Father's Day.

5- The United States isn't the only country (besides Mexico) that celebrates it. Canada celebrates this holiday as well. In Vancouver, there is an annual skydiving event and in the Cayman Islands there is an air guitar competition every May 5.
