High school teams begin CIF playoffs

Soccer players have one goal: win San Diego Section playoffs

Months of off-season training for some.

Weeks of playing with club teams for others.

Another three months of playing with their high school teams.

That is the list of activities that most high school soccer players go through every year. And there might not be something as exciting for these players than the San Diego Section playoffs.

Preseason tournaments and league matches are over. The time for CIF supremacy begins Tuesday when boys and girls teams begin Division I through V tournament competition en route to the section championships March 5.

Some teams could possibly move on to the Southern California State Regionals in March but schools are focusing on their next opponent, for now.

Here is a list of playoff pairings that include a handful of teams from the South Bay playing in four of the five divisions.

Division V was added this season for smaller schools.

BOYS

DIVISION I

Outlook: Perennial powerhouse Poway (23-1-3) earned the top seed while Rancho Bernardo (14-5-1), San Pasqual (18-3-5, moved up a division this season) and Torrey Pines (11-7-5) earned seeds 2-4. The top four seeds earn first round byes. Otay Ranch and Mesa League runner-up, Chula Vista, will represent the South Bay with first round matches Tuesday.
