Uber in Mexico Offers Free Rides During Massive Taxi Protests

While traditional unions cease operations, Uber cleverly fires back with special offer

MEXICO CITY.- 'Traditional' transit systems have chosen Monday, May 25th as a day to protest against ridesharing services like Uber and Cabify.

Thousands of taxi drivers marched today demanding that both Uber and Cabify withdraw their service, who upset drivers blames for a drop in their passengers, labeling them as "unfair competition", while voicing their disagreements over the multitude of permits Uber supposedly avoids by not being officially considered as a public service.

With the start of these protests, large parts of the city were left with only some mass transit and no cabs, so Uber took it upon itself to offer bot a solution and a neat way to spite taxi unions protesting: offer everyone a free ride.

Just for today, from 7:00 a.m until 9:59 p.m any Uber user will be able to request this service up to two times, with a maximum cost of $150 pesos ($9dlls).

In order to request a free Uber ride, just enter the code #UBERMAYO25 and the nearest vehicle will pick you up at your location.

A newsletter posted on the company's official blog read: "We have a commitment with you, with our city and our country, which is one of Uber's most vibrant and exciting markets."

"We're positive that a city as progressive and innovative as this one has a huge desire to promote technological progress as well as mobility options that improve the quality of life. Mexico City is going through a renaissance phase of cultural, economical, entrepreneurial and technological explosion. Uber will contribute and will be part of the positive change."
