Nearly 3,000 Migrants Rescued From The Strait Of Sicily

They were saved thanks to 21 rescue missions

According to the Italian Coast Guard, over the last 24 hours approximately 2,900 immigrants were rescued from the Strait Of Silicy. They were saved thanks to 21 rescue missions coordinated by the Roman Coast Guard Headquarters and the Ministry of Infrastructures and Transportation.

The immigrants were rescued by three Italian ships and a Spanish one, also help by a United Kingdom and Ireland military unit was provided, as well as a private ship from the MOAS organization.

According to data from the Interior Ministry, 2015 has had nearly 60,000 immigrants that have landed on Italian coast, a slightly superior number that the one registered in 2014.

25% of the immigrants that arrived to Italy are Eritreans, 10% Nigerians, 9% Somali, 7% Syrian and the rest is divided among different nationalities.
