Smoking Could Drive You Crazy

A relationship between smoking and the brain has been revealed

For obvious reasons, smoking can easily be linked to respiratory ailments, however, it has been discovered that tobacco has even bigger repercussions.

Researchers from King College in London have detected that smoking can cause schizophrenia, given that nicotine can affect the brain. It was known that those who suffer from psychosis use cigarettes to calm the voices inside their head as well as hallucinations, nevertheless, today this belief has taken a 360º turn.

Studies have revealed that this is actually a reverse process. Smoking can make a person even more susceptible to schizophrenia and other type of psychosis. Out of 14,055 smokers and 237, 162 non smokers, 57% of people with this ailment were already addicted to cigarettes when they had their first attack.

Doctor James MacCabe hopes that with the results of this study, people will take bigger precautions. Currently, 1 out of 100 people suffer from this condition but this number may increase to 2 out of 100 for those who smoke. Nicotine, among other things, increases dopamine levels in the brain, which reaffirms the mental sickness/smoking relationship.
