INDIA.- In Andhra Pradesh, a state in India's south, the festival Maha Pushkaram was taking place in the city of Rajahmundry when a sudden stampede left 27 people dead and 29 injured. According to head of government, N. Chandrababu Naidu, 23 of the deceased were women.

It all happened when a large number of pilgrims headed towards the Godavari river, in order to take a sacred bath during the festival destined to honor rivers, given that this event only happens in the region every 144 years.

According to local news agency IANS, official sources reported that those who were injured were taken to the nearest hospital, and given that some of them are gravely injured, the number of deaths could increase.

Naidu, aside from visiting the injured, will give compensation to the families of the deceased, pointing out that "We are going to investigation how this incident was produced, even after we took all necessary precautions."
