Boy Is Sacrificed During Nepalese Religious Ritual

Crime authors thought the sacrifice would cure another child's illness

NEPAL.-A man in Nepal has confessed to murdering a child after assuring that a shaman had advised him to do a human sacrifice that supposedly would see his sick sick, according to local police.

The body of 10 year old Jivan Kohar was found on July 24th on the outskirts of the Kudiya village, located Southwest of Nepal. The child had been reported as missing 3 days before.

Police superintended and chief of investigation, Nal Prasad Upadhyaya, mentioned to CNN that Kodai Harijan admitted to have committed a crime alongside his relatives, after he had seen the shaman. In some cultures it is believed that shamans have magical powers capable of curing illness'.

According to the police's testimony, Harijan and his relatives found the small boy playing with his friends and lured him away with a candy bag and the promise of 50 rupias.

They took the small boy to a temple outside the village where they performed the religious ritual. Afterwards, they went to a field where 3 people held the boy down while another one slit his throat. When police found him, its head was nearly detached from the body.

Eleven people, including the shaman, were arrest for participating in the crime. Until now, only 5 people have admitted to committing the crime.

It is said that in villages such as Nawalparasi, a border district in India, which is one of the poorest areas of the country, where people don't' have access to education and are very superstitious; this social class are know as the 'untouchables'. Everyone involved in the crime belonged to this group.
