Green Talks: Talking About Sustainability and Generating Consciousness

At the center of the discussion - the region's severe drought conditions

Green Talks is a social movement to discuss current topics of interest in the realm of the environment and sustainability. This month the group will be hosting its second talk centered around a hot topic: Water. With California and Baja California experiencing one of the worst droughts on record, many socially conscious people are wondering what more they can be doing to reduce their water consumption. The second Green Talks will discuss the challenges and opportunities that the current drought presents.

According to Adrian Valdés, one of Green Talks organizers, "beyond creating more awareness, Green Talks intents to become a catalyzer to generate new ideas and projects". The long term goal is for Green Talks to become a worldwide movement, and for these "events to be replicated individually in different cities throughout Mexico, and the US", according to Adrian Valdés, to create an informed, purposeful and active community.

This event will also showcase various sustainability projects in place that can help alleviate the water shortage problem. The event organizers hope that by bringing together different sectors – private, government, non-profit, academia, and concerned citizens - these can work together and brainstorm on what more can be done to reduce water consumption in the region.

Included as distinguished presenters for the second edition of Green Talks are Osvel Hinojosa of PRONATURA, Mexico's largest non-profit environmental conservation group; Dr. Carlos de la Parra of one of Mexico's most prestigious think tanks, El Colegio de la Frontera Norte; and Hernando Durán of Tijuana Verde, an initiative of Tijuana Innovadora, who will be moderating the discussion.

The group intends to organize three talks a year every four months. The first Green Talks discussed sustainability, and future talks in the works will cover green infrastructure, urban mobility, and air pollution. An entry fee of $70 pesos is charged to cover expenses and snacks for attendees.

The talk will take place on August 7 2015 from 6pm to 11pm at CEART Tijuana. More more information, visit their Facebook page.
