Desperate teams clawing for a win

Ámerica and Toluca need a win to recover their pride

The duel between the Raging Devils and wounded Eagles is the most interesting match-up this weekend in Mexico’s Clausura Tournament.

The Diablos Rojos Toluca are trying to recover from a devastating 3-2 loss at home to Necaxa Rayados. The Diablos took a 2-0 half-time lead only to allow three goals in the second half by Necaxa, the last place team in the tournament standings.

Toluca had received only one goal in the entire tournament before this match against the Rayados.

The loss cost Toluca a shot at first place in the tournament standings.

On the other hand, América lost the battle between Mexico's largest TV networks, with a 2-1 loss to Morelia at Estadio Azteca.

América is owned by TV giant Televisa. TV Azteca owns Morelia.

The Águilas are coming off a second-straight loss. The first came against Necaxa.

América had won three straight games after coach Carlos Reinoso took over for the fired Manolo Lapuente. It's been a downhill since. The team is in danger of failing to qualify for the post season.

And to make matters worse for América, it will be without its starting center midfielder. Matias Vuosso is to miss the game serving a red card suspension. He was ejected from the Morelia match for mouthing off to a line judge.

The league's disciplinary commission suspended the Argentine-born, naturalized Mexican for two matches.

América’s fans can take comfort, however, in their coach's history against Toluca.

Reinoso had good games against Toluca when he played for América. He will have his hands full against a team looking to dust off some angst.

Las Águilas are 32-29-20 against Toluca since 1975.

The last time Toluca beat América at Estadio Azteca was in 2008 during the Clausura tournament with a 1-0 outing.

Ámerica beat Toluca in the 2009 Apertura 7-1 at home.

The Xolos

Club Tijuana Xoloitzcuintles has yet to win at home this season. The Xolos played two matches this week. They won on the road 2-0 against Alacranes Negros de Durango last Wednesday. But Tijuana had a shot at three points but couldn't find the game-winner in a 2-2 draw against Albinegros de Orizaba last Sunday.

The Xolos will try to clinch another road win with a Week 9 match up at Universidad Autonoma de Puebla.
