Two Women From Ensenada Are First Female Same-Sex Marriage Performed In Baja

Ceremony to take place next Monday

ENSENADA. Rocio Lopez Gorosave, Official of the Registry Office announced today, that there are no legal obstacles for the first marriage between two women to take place on Baja's soil. Everything is in order for the ceremony, which will happen next Monday at 1:00 p.m. at Ensenada's City Hall.

The fiancées were presented a no objections injunction at City Hall, a measure that many same sex couples have taken since the Nation's Supreme Court declared that any law that forbade these unions was unconstitutional.

This historic step towards marriage equality adds to the union of Victor M. Aguirre and Victor F. Urias in Mexicali (the first couple to get married in Baja after a long and widely media covered journey) and the marriage of Luis Vargas and Michael Buzajan in Tijuana (the first ones to get married in the city).

There are already dozens of both female and male same-sex marriages in Baja California, but most are marriages preformed somewhere else and simply recognized by local and federal authorities. Some chose to take advantage of the border before it was even possible in Baja. Since 2013, Mexico's Social Security offices in Baja have registered same-sex unions that qualified for spousal benefits, mostly unions that took place in California and were recognized bye Mexico.
