Can You Fool A Breathalyzer?

The answer will surprise you

Sorry to disappoint you, but the answer is NO.

While there might be ways to create some sort of doubt while taking the test, but this is only possible when your alcohol levels are low and the possibilities of getting into trouble are slim to none; however, once the alcohol in your blood exceeds levels established by the law, it doesn't matter how many marzipans or pennies you chew on, you won't be able to fool cops, at least not in Mexico or Tijuana.

Years ago Discovery Channel's, Mythbusters, debunked several of these alleged remedies, from breath mints to mouth washes.

Given that there are hundreds of myths on how to "fool" an alcohol test, let's start of with the most popular and recent one:

Marzipan

Does it work? Of course not. While it may take the smell of your breath, alcohol tests take in the breath coming from your lungs (which is why the ask you to breath in and blow), indirectly detecting the levels of alcohol in your blood. So it doesn't matter what you put in your mouth to avoid the smell, that's not what the breathalyzer will detect.

Coffee Grains

This is a popular remedy in Mexico and Latin America, nevertheless, is still just a myth. Tasty yet untrue.

Putting Coins In Your Mouth?

Alcohol tests use chemical reactions based on the alcohol vapor inside your mouth and the strips in the device that receive it. Hence, the belief that sucking on a cooper or silver coin and even on small battery may alter results, fooling an alcohol test. This surely works, right? Wrong! First of all, gross! and secondly, you would need to be very discreet in order for those coins or battery to go unnoticed while take the test.

That goes for any alcohol "remedy". Besides, when are you going to go through with all those remedies standing in front of a cop?

Mouth Wash

Not only does it not work, it actually makes it worse given that mouth washes contain alcohol. (Duh!)

Breathe In & Breathe Out?

It might seem plausible, but it can also fireback on you. The logic of this myth is that you get rid of alcohol faster, but if the key is to wait for alcohol to get out of your system, then just wait until you are ready to leave the party.

The only way to avoid getting alcohol tested or even worse a DIU is: Don't drink too much (or don't drink at all). Be hip and use Uber, always be sure to have a designated driver.

Myth Bonus

An alcohol test doesn't actually detect the alcohol in your blood. While there are immediate blood tests that can measure it, these are only applied when there is certain amount of doubt with your breath test, but there are usually not required. There might be some cases where you may have to go under a secondary inspection, but that's subject of another article.
