Baja California Winemakers Talk About the Future of the Industry

The Baja Culinary Fest held a panel with three Valle de Guadalupe producers

An event named "Diálogo entre productores de uva" (Conversations Between Wine Producers) took place on the last day of Baja Culinary Fest's 5th edition in which three wine experts from the Valle de Guadalupe discussed the industry's current situation.

Victor Segura, owner of "Las Nubes" and "Madera 5" wineries, Camillo Magoni of "Casa Magoni" and Santiago López of "Solar Fortún" sat down with bottles of water to fend off the heat and shared their experiences as wine producers in the Valle de Guadalupe with the public.

"We, as a company have a responsibility to promote this movement," said Santiago López; one of the youngest entrepreneurs there, referring to the growing wine industry at Valle de Guadalupe and nationwide.

Among the subjects discussed at Foro Luna's outdoor panel at the Centro Cultural Tijuana, were the stories of each of the wineries, government's local consumption support, per capita consumption on a national level (about 600 milliliters per year), the price versus quality, and their expectations regarding their company's journey in the industry.

During the lecture, Victor Segura emphasized that by cooperating with higher education institutions; the quality of local wine would improve. "Universities should show more interest in the studying of the industry needs," said Segura.

"Technology isn't the equipment that we put inside the cellar," said Magoni who came from Italy and settled in Baja California, where his company has earned a great reputation. For him, wine's popularity in Mexico is about to begin.
