So Where is "El Chapo" Guzmán Hiding?

Military forces keep close watch on area known as the Mexican "Golden Triangle".

After a failed operation, authorities confirm that Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán is hiding in Mexico's northwest region, an area penned by the U.S. as the Mexican "Golden Triangle."

The Mexican Navy has set forth a search plan in the region that encompasses the states of Chihuahua, Sinaloa and Durango, after authorities intercepted the capo's messages coming from a ranch located in this region.

The Sinaloa Cartel's leader hideout received its name in the '70s due to its similarities with the original Golden Triangle, a region that is known at the top opium producer in the world, more specifically, in the countries of Myanmar, Laos and Thailand.

On the other hand, the Mexican triangle mainly focuses on big marijuana and poppy (where heroin comes from) crops. The Sinaloa Cartel controls these crop fields, located on the Sierra Madre Occidental, but there are constant confrontations with other drug organizations.

This territory is known for its violence and for being a cradle for relentless generations of Mexican drug traffickers. From Guzmán to Ismael Zambada García aka "El Mayo", to the Beltrán Leyva brothers and Miguel Ángel Félix Gallardo, aka "Jefe de Jefes", among others.

"The best hideout for El Chapo is his birthplace without a doubt, there he can do whatever he pleases and the locals respect and protect him," said one security analyst of the Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Education (Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey in Spanish) to La Opinión.

Even though he knows how to move around his territory, now he faces the challenge of being wounded, a result of him evading capture last week, according to the government. Also, military forces have already been keeping a close watch on the towns of Cosalá in Sinaloa and Tamazula in Durango, entry and exit areas most frequently used by the Cartel.
