Mexico's Health Department: A Joint Won't Kill You

Teenagers are priority in the legalization debate.

"Nothing will happen to you if you smoke a marijuana cigarette", said the head of the Health Department, Mercedes Juan López, as a first approach to debate about the study and evaluation regarding the marijuana legalization that the Interior Ministry will coordinate.

Even though Juan López assures that smoking a marijuana cigarette won't harm you, she explained that if it becomes a chronic addiction, then it could bring great health risks, primarily to the central nervous system, lungs as well as behavioral changes and cognitive effects.

The main debate approach will be on the effects that it has on kids and teenagers. "The Health Department has a fundamental role to analyze the scientific evidence of the health risks involved, as well as examining national and international studies that have already been done", said Juan López.

The ruling of Mexico's Supreme Court that legally protects four individuals on the recreational use of marijuana is still pending to be published on Mexico's Official Journal of the Federation, once that happens the Health Department will be the one to issue the first permits of its kind.
