911 To Be Mexico's New Emergency Number

All of the emergency numbers will migrate to the new one.

Soon you'll only need to remember one number in case of an emergency in Mexico: 911. It won't matter your location within the country, or if your cellphone doesn't have any balance left (in case of prepaid phones).

The announcement was made by Mexico's Federal Telecommunications Institute (Instituto Federal de Telecomunicaciones [IFT] in Spanish), establishing a "nationwide unique coordinated number for emergency services requests", it'll be free of charge and unlimited.

Mexican's will no longer have to remember a long list of emergency contact numbers in case of needing help from the local, state or federal police, the Red Cross, the fire department or to make an anonymous call, because now all of these departments will migrate to the newly appointed 911 number.

The new emergency number will be administered nationwide by the Executive Secretary of the National System of Public Safety (Secretariado Ejecutivo del Sistema Nacional de Seguridad Pública in Spanish).
