The Future of the Force is Strong with Latinos Thanks to Star Wars

There are Mexicans among them, of course.

Diego Luna, Lupita Nyong'o, Benicio del Toro, Miranda, Oscar Isaac.

Since the beginning, Star Wars has managed to make some strides in racial inclusion when it comes to its cast and especially with its latest entry in the saga, The Force Awakens. This new generation that begins with The Force Awakens has been especially kind to Latinos, who are joining the ranks of movie history, either as actors or important cogs in the production machine. Being proud latino's ourselves, we decided to take a look at what the Galaxy, far far away, has in store for hispanics in the next couple of years.

Starting with The Force Awakens, J.J. Abrams movie, three Latinos form part of it in some way.

Oscar Isaac

Born in Guatemala, Oscar Isaac plays the role of Poe Dameron in The Force Awakens, regarded as the best pilot of the Resistance under General Leia’s command.

Lupita Nyong'o

Lupita Nyong'o was born in Mexico City, she portrays Maz Kanata in The Force Awakens, a character who has learned a lot from the Force throughout the years and was a (former) owner of a castle, a place where travelers, smugglers and other intergalactic individuals used to hang out. She also has another important role in the movie, but don’t worry we won’t tell you in case you haven’t seen it yet.

Lin-Manuel Miranda

Even though he didn’t act in the movie, Miranda, a Puerto Rico native, contributed to the film’s score. More specifically, with the cantina music where Han Solo, Chewbacca, Rey and Finn arrive at Maz Kanata’s temple.

Miranda met J.J. Abrams after he went to a performance of his Broadway musical Hamilton. Days after meeting him, Abrams called Miranda to offer the collaboration of the music for that scene.

Diego Luna

The Mexican actor Diego Luna, who is now a well-known figure in Hollywood, is part of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, a saga spinoff that focuses on a band of Rebel fighters on a mission to steal the plans for the first Death Star. Back in September, there was released image of the film’s production where the actor can be seen.

Benicio del Toro

Benicio del Toro, another Puerto Rican involved in the franchise, confirmed to appear as a villain in Episode VIII in a galaxy far, far away.

Not only is the franchise filled with Latinos, it seems that Star Wars: Episode VIII will be filmed mainly in Mexico, including Baja Film Studios located in Rosarito, this according to a statement given by Gustavo Torres Ramírez, a representative of Rosarito’s Secretary of Tourism.

Exciting times in the industry (not just for Latinos) and we hope the biggest franchise in Hollywood will be even more inclusive on its ride through the next couple of years.
