Tijuana is already one of the top destinations in the world for post-bariatric (or body contouring) surgeries, but by hosting the International Conference on Post Bariatric Surgery on August 2016, the city is looking to cement itself as the world capital of these types of procedures.
The head of the Plastic, Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgeons Association of Baja California (Colegio de Cirujanos Plásticos, Estéticos y Reconstructivos de Baja California [CCPERBC] in Spanish), Daniel Camacho Melo, explains that most patients that arrive in the city come from Canada, followed by U.S., English, French, Spanish and Asian citizens.

The post-bariatric surgery uses a hard-to-pronounce word to refer to a simple process which is: removing the skin excess that is left from other surgeries (like liposuction, gastric bands, intragastric balloon, among others.)
This favorable border panorama is something that Camacho emphasizes, explaining that between 90 to 120 surgeries will need the removal of excess skin in two years tops.
Even though Brazil and the U.S. lead the plastic surgery world, Mexico has been right behind them since 2014, placing itself on third place of the list, according to the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS). If it continues this way, it may be that this border town may become the capital that Camacho predicts.
