Mexico's First Lady Criticized for Wearing Veil in Saudi Arabia, Unlike Michelle Obama

Angelica Rivera scrutinized over veil on social media

This weekend, Mexico's president Enrique Peña Nieto, visited Saudi Arabia to award king Salman bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud and recognize the "prominent services" that he has "made" towards humanity, something that outraged people online due to Saudi Arabia's history regarding human rights violations.

However, this whole kerfuffle didn't end there. The conversation online turned towards Angelica Rivera, Mexico's first lady, who was in attendance along with her husband and just look at what she was wearing: A veil!

She's been trending all over social media for the sole fact of wearing a veil during her Saudi Arabia visit. The criticism is so big -or rather- the desire to criticize is so big, that someone even took the time to Photoshop the original photo and transformed her somewhat veil-covered head into a totally-covered one.

Before their trip towards the Middle East, multiple media sources confirmed the first lady would need to include a veil in her outfits while visiting the country.

While some people know that this is just a meme and that the picture is modified, there's others who think the criticism is legitimate, because of precedent with other first ladies. Regardless of which picture we are talking about, Rivera has already been called a "hypocrite" for wearing the veil and some people have even "recommended" her to follow Michelle Obama's steps.

Ms. Obama traveled alongside U.S. president Barack Obama to Saudi Arabia back in January of 2015 to pay their respects towards the late king Abdullah. She decided on not covering herself with a veil, which also stirred controversy at the time, generating positive as well as negative comments.

Except, on FLOTUS's case, most of the comments were positive. She even got praised by political figures, who applauded her outfit decision: "Kudos to First Lady Michelle Obama for standing up for women worldwide and refusing to wear a Sharia-mandated head-scarf in Saudi Arabia. Nicely done.", tweeted senator Ted Cruz.

According to the BBC, there's one exception to women wearing the veil, which is only foreign women are allowed to show their hair. So, Michelle Obama gets criticized for not wearing the damn veil and now Mexico's first lady Angelica Rivera gets criticized for wearing it. It's a little confusing isn't it?

Actually, there were some moments when Rivera didn't even use the head-scarf, check out this unedited picture for yourself:

Still, the outrage and/or disappointment is understandable since this only shows Rivera's lack of effort towards the progress of women's rights in the world, especially in retrograde countries such as this, and even more important, over an outfit choice that means so much in those parts of the world.
