"Barrios Hermanos" Hopes To Unite Tijuana and San Diego Neighborhoods

A program that takes the Sister City movement to a smaller scale between South Park in SD and Colonia Federal in TJ

TIJUANA - Barrios Hermanos, a project that hopes to build stronger bonds between San Diego's South Park neighborhood and Tijuana's Colonia Federal, was presented yesterday as part of a pilot program conceived by Centro Ventures, an urban development group based in Tijuana.

The main goal of Barrios Hermanos —roughly translated as "Brotherly Neighborhoods"— is to create a series of programs between the two neighborhoods, similar to the Sister Cities movement but on a smaller scale, where the two barrios will be able to share best practice recommendations, experiences and networking between the local residents.

A crucial part of the presentation was the unveiling of the project's main hub. Located inside one of the buildings that forms part of the future Estación Federal.

Miguel Marshall, Centro Venture's CEO, was the one in charge of laying out the building details, which is scheduled to open on June of this year.

The building will include housing, offices, businesses and even a dedicated area for art expositions.

According to Marshall, the main goals of the building is to renovate the neighborhood and inject it with new life. A neighborhood that's been losing its tenants as time goes by. Another goal is the creation of an art district in the area, one that attracts investment and all kinds of people, and lastly, the creation of an urban lifestyle that facilitates urban mobility right in the heart of the city.

In attendance where California business owners and the local media, and all of them were invited to participate on a tour that started at Colonia Federal and ended in an early seafood dinner in one of the city's hippest seafood restaurants in Downtown Tijuana. The tour stops included La Casa del Túnel, the Escuela Libre de Arquitectura, the Pasaje Rodríguez and a small stroll around Avenida Revolución.
