Plane packed with drugs seized

Police seize more than 1,000 pounds of marijuana, cocaine in Mexicali

Police seized a small plane transporting marijuana and cocaine after it landed in a clandestine runway in Mexicali Saturday, federal authorities announced.

State aerial authorities detected the Cessna by radar and contacted the Federal Investigations Agency, which intercepted the plane after it landed on a flat stretch of land being used as a landing strip, according to a bulletin from the Mexican Attorney General's Office.

Federal agents detained two men who were allegedly transporting 84 packages that contained around 954 pounds of marijuana and 12 packages with around 28 pounds of cocaine. They were identified as Jesús Lindbergh Gómez García and Juan Gabriel Zurita Aguilar.

The bulletin did not say where the plane's flight had originated or what criminal organization was behind it. However, a source at the Attorney General's Office said the craft had taken off from Sinaloa state on orders from cartel leader "Chapo" Guzmán.
