Those New Traffic Lights You've Seen Around Tijuana Are for the New BRT System

But they won't start working until August

TIJUANA - Tijuana's local government has been installing new traffic lights all around the main avenues of the city and form part of the new BRT system's route 1.

The Ministry of Ecology and Urban Development (SDUE), stated that the construction work being done started back in May 2015 in 9th Street in Downtown Tijuana as well as work being done in multiple roundabouts in Paseo de los Héroes and in Zona Río since November of last year.

It's worth noting that 30 structures have been installed on the roadways mentioned above, however, the traffic lights won't start working until a August of this year, when the new BRT system starts operating.

The roundabouts that are being worked on so far have been the ones on Paseo de los Héroes around the Independencia, Cuauhtémoc, Diego Rivera and Siqueiros Boulevards, as well as the Centenario Boulevard located between the General Márquez de León and Independencia.

So far, there's been a 15% progress overall and work will continue on different points around the city. These new traffic lights will be equipped with traffic controller systems and video detection systems that will improve traffic times which in turn will be safer for drivers.

These new traffic lights will be synchronized in order to reduce the bus time tables that form part of the new BRT system. The local government encourages drivers to follow the road signs and take precautions while construction work is in progress.
