Eight killed in new wave of violence

People were killed across the Tijuana region in separate attacks

Tijuana – Eight people were killed in the city over the weekend in a new wave of violence, the state Attorney General’s Office reported Monday.

Saturday was the most violent day, with five people murdered.

The first killing was logged around 7:30 a.m. Saturday, when the body of a man, believed to be in his thirties, was found in an alley in the city’s northeast side. His face had signs of having been beaten.

Two hours later, a body was found inside a home in the eastside neighborhood of Colina de Cortés. The victim, identified as Juan de Dios Samaniego, 47, was handcuffed, had his feet bound with adhesive tape and his face covered with an article of clothing. He had stab wounds to his chest and abdomen.

A 7 p.m. the bodies of a man and a woman were found dumped on the street in the southeastern neighborhood of El Rubí. The man, between 35 to 40 years old, bore deep marks around his neck and wrists; while the woman, thought to be 20 to 25 years old, had a piece of electric tape entwined with a black scarf wrapped around her neck.

Two hours later a man was found shot to death on Natura Street and Boulevard 2000, in the city’s east side. The man carried identification with the name of Salvador Fuente Ramírez, 44, and had several bullet wounds. Six .38 mm shells were found at the scene.

On Sunday, around 6:45 p.m., the body of a man was found in the parking lot of the Río II condominiums, located on the vía rápida in the Río zone. The man, believed to be in his thirties, was found inside a blue Plymouth with a gunshot to the head.

Another man was found shot to death around 10:30 p.m. in the Altiplano neighborhood, in the city’s east side.

The man, 25 to 30 years old, carried identification with the name of Jesús Yoges Contreras.

Around 7:30 a.m. Monday, the body of a man was found on the Tijuana-Rosarito free road, near kilometer 17.2.

The victim, was 25 to 30 years old, was covered in a white sheet and had several bullet wounds, one of them to forehead. Shell casings were recovered at the scene.

In recent days, authorities have publicly noted that deadly violence has gone down in the city. They point out that 87 killings were reported in the first two months of the year, 96 fewer than in the same period in 2010.
