TIJUANA – This Monday, the Baja California Electoral Institute (IEE) will present their final analysis results regarding an "exhaustive review" request by independent candidates, media executive Carolina Aubanel and attorney Atilano Peña, for a spot on the Tijuana mayoral ballot.

On Friday, Aubanel requested a review of 8,000 signatures considered invalid by the electoral authorities in Mexicali.

Her defense? The electoral officials weren't clear on which procedures were used to consider those signatures invalid and that signatures that have a 1-letter discrepancy should be considered valid.

As for Atilano, he requested the criteria used to not consider some of his signatures needed to run as an independent.

He also criticized the extension given by Mexico's National Electoral Institute (NEI) to collect more signatures, he considers the NEI shouldn't have a saying on local election procedures.

On the other hand, independent candidate Gastón Luken Garza, a former federal legislator, was the only one to gain approval for Tijuana's mayoral race as an independent.

He is expected to formally register as a candidate on Monday.

The election is scheduled to take place on June 5 and it'll be the first one in Tijuana to have non-party candidates on its ballot.
