Baja California Is The Fifth Economy With Major Export Capacity

Baja California is ranked fifth at a national level in the Exporter Complexity Index (ICE for its acronym in Spanish), surpassing entities such as Queretaro, Mexico City and Guanajuato, according to the results of Economic Complexity Atlas, published by Harvard University, the Center for Economic Research and Teaching (CIDE for its acronym in Spanish) and the Mexican Secretariat of Finance and Public Credit (SHCP for its acronym in Spanish).

To generate the ranking the amount of exports, diversity and specialization in products exported by each entity are considered. Only during 2014 exports of Baja California exceeded 40,000 million USD and were destined for more than 160 countries. Electronics, machinery and transport vehicles are among the main exported products.

When analyzing the results by geographical area in more detail, one can observe that the Mexicali metropolitan area (ZM for its acronym in Spanish) occupies the 10th place nationally, while the Tijuana-Tecate-Rosarito ZM is positioned in 16th place.
